We’re into the final week of the transfer window, and Alexander Isak’s future remains unclear.
Isak has been the story of the summer so far. The striker wants to join Liverpool, while Liverpool are keen to sign Isak as well.
However, as of yet, a deal hasn’t been done.
Interestingly, Newcastle played against Liverpool on Monday evening and that game was just as dramatic as this transfer saga.
Gary Neville reckons the Isak deal was delayed due to this match, and speaking to ViaSport, Peter Schmeichel has now shared a similar theory.
Indeed, according to Schmeichel, Newcastle have been holding off on this deal due to this match, and he expects Isak to sign for Liverpool the day after this game.

Peter Schmeichel says Alexander Isak will sign for Liverpool today
Schmeichel shared his verdict on the Isak situation and how this will play out.
According to the pundit this deal is about to be done now that the crunch clash on Monday at St James’ Park is out of the way.
“I suspect that Newcastle have been holding off on this deal until this game is done,” Schmeichel said.
“Could you imagine if he’d come in last week and scored three goals today, which he is capable of, that’s how good he is.
“Wait until tomorrow. I’m absolutely sure that tomorrow this deal will be done. It will be in the region of £135m, a record deal. There’s no way in this life that Newcastle can refuse that kind of money, no way.”
British transfer records ranked
Schmeichel reckons Isak is set to sign for Liverpool in a £135m deal, and that would make the striker the most expensive player in British football history.
Indeed, Isak would be a Premier League record signing by some margin if this theory proves to be true.
| Rank | Player | From | To | Year | Fee |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Florian Wirtz | Bayer Leverkusen | Liverpool | 2025 | £116 m |
| 2 | Moises Caicedo | Brighton | Chelsea | 2023 | £115 m |
| 3 | Enzo Fernández | Benfica | Chelsea | 2023 | £106.8 m |
| 4 | Declan Rice | West Ham United | Arsenal | 2023 | £105 m |
| 5 | Jack Grealish | Aston Villa | Manchester City | 2021 | £100 m |
Of course, whether or not Schmeichel is ultimately proven to be right remains to be seen.
This situation has been bubbling away for quite some time, and Liverpool haven’t made a bid since their first offer was knocked back a few weeks ago.
However, as we all know only too well, things can change in an instant in football, and if Liverpool act quickly, Isak could soon be on his way to Anfield.
