Liverpool secured a second win of the new Premier League season, but only after some remarkable drama against Newcastle United.
Liverpool saw Arsenal beat Leeds United 5-0 over the weekend, with the Gunners securing another victory to make it two wins from two Premier League games this season.
Arsenal head to Anfield to take on Liverpool this weekend, and Arne Slot would have wanted to head into that game on six points as well.
Liverpool headed to Newcastle United on Monday night, with the Reds’ pursuit of Alexander Isak dominating the pre-game conversation.
Goals from Ryan Gravenberch and summer signing Hugo Ekitike, either side of an Anthony Gordon red card, left Liverpool 2-0 up and seemingly heading for victory.
Bruno Guimaraes and William Osula remarkably hauled 10-man Newcastle level, and they even looked the more likely side to win late on.
Instead, Liverpool found one more twist in the tale as teenage substitute Rio Ngumoha fired home the winner and broke Newcastle hearts in stoppage time.

Chelsea fans on Rio Ngumoha
Liverpool were second best for much of this game and would arguably have been fortunate to claim a point, never mind all three.
Slot didn’t back down, though, and throwing 16-year-old Ngumoha into such an intense game was a big call.
Ngumoha has dazzled for Liverpool in pre-season, and Slot wasn’t afraid to throw him into Premier League action.
That decision paid dividends, as Ngumoha popped up with the crucial goal to hand Liverpool all three points at St James’ Park.
Liverpool fans have a new hero in Ngumoha, but his exploits on Monday will sting for many Chelsea supporters.
Ngumoha spent eight years in the Chelsea ranks, but left the club to join Liverpool in the summer of 2024.
Now seemingly set for stardom at Liverpool, Ngumoha sparked reactions from Chelsea fans with his goal on Monday night.
Some can’t believe Ngumoha left Chelsea, believing that the club will pay for years to come, having lost such an impressive talent.
Others think Ngumoha simply wouldn’t have been given any first-team chances under Enzo Maresca and are actually pleased to see him shine for Liverpool.
Some pointed the finger at those above Maresca, suggesting that losing Ngumoha must be viewed as ‘embarrassing’ and a ‘complete failure’.
- Why did Chelsea let Rio Ngumoha go again?
- Man the Chelsea sporting directors not convincing Rio Ngumoha to stick around with the state of left wing at the time for Chelsea is a massive scar on their resume. Complete failure.
- The composure to put that in the back of the net, take a bow, Ngumoha
- We still haven’t even got any money out of Liverpool for Ngumoha, btw. Even when we do agree a fee it’s likely to be a couple of million at most. Embarrassing to let a talent like that end up at a rival Premier League club.
- Rio Ngumoha, the kid who decided to leave Chelsea at 14, showing these owners what they missed out on.
- This Ngumoha goal is a heartbreaker. This is a boy Liverpool stole from Chelsea, promising him a pathway to first-team football, which Maresca couldn’t have given him.
- Would absolutely love to see Ngumoha on the left wing for Chelsea
- Rio Ngumoha, what a baller. Massive regret when he left Chelsea, couldn’t agree contract terms and guarantee game time, this one is going to sting us
- Props to Ngumoha. He bet on himself and left Chelsea. Chelsea need to make sure guys like him in our academy don’t walk out the door. You have to offer them a path, even if things don’t work out long-term. I say that as we are about to sell Tyrique George to buy Garnacho
- Oi, let me know who let Ngumoha go. Just let me know.
- In Chelsea, Rio Ngumoha wouldn’t even see the bench in games like this. Lowkey gutted he left Chelsea, but happy for his career.
- I’m already vexed at Chelsea letting Rio Ngumoha go
How Chelsea feel about losing Rio Ngumoha to Liverpool
Seeing Ngumoha score his dramatic winner against Newcastle will have stung for Chelsea academy staff as well as fans.
The teenager is clearly an enormous talent, and the sight of him shining in Liverpool red rather than Chelsea blue won’t sit right for some.
TBR Football reported earlier in August that Chelsea were ‘annoyed’ to see Ngumoha leave, with his departure considered to be a ‘real frustration’.
Chelsea know all about Ngumoha’s talent, and nobody at Stamford Bridge is really surprised to see him impress for Liverpool at such an early age.
Chelsea have a clear stance on these deals, though, believing that losing academy players is just part of the game now.
The goal is to just have more wins than losses, and Chelsea are known for being active in targeting top young academy players.
Chelsea may hope to find another Ngumoha elsewhere, but it may take a really special addition to make up for losing Ngumoha to Liverpool.
