Manchester United have made a number of signings over the years that have shocked the world.
Robin van Persie joined Manchester United in a blockbuster move in 2012, and Arsenal fans still haven’t forgiven Van Persie for that move.
Meanwhile, back in 2021, United re-signed Cristiano Ronaldo in a huge move that sent shockwaves across the footballing landscape.
Bruno Fernandes would name Ronaldo as his greatest teammate after he re-joined the Red Devils.
However, over 30 years ago, United made another signing that left the footballing world shocked as they signed Andy Cole from Newcastle United.
Speaking on his podcast, Peter Crouch has been discussing some of the most shocking moves in football history, and he says that he was particularly stunned by Cole’s £7m move to United.

Peter Crouch was stunned by Andy Cole to Manchester United
Crouch told the story of how he was left flabbergasted when he saw that Cole had signed for Manchester United.
In true old-school fashion, Crouch saw this transfer in the newspaper, and he was absolutely shocked by the deal.
“I was delivering a newspaper, I told you, I was delivering a newspaper. I was a paper boy and I remember delivering a newspaper and I looked at the back of the newspaper and Andy Cole had a Man United shirt on. I said, this is outrageous,” Crouch said.
I remember doing the fastest delivery ever, running home saying, Dad, Andy Cole is at Man United, and he said, shut up, son. Don’t be so ridiculous.
“Yeah, Andy Cole went to Man United. I was flabbergasted.”

Andy Cole became an incredible player after leaving Arsenal for Newcastle, and he would continue to grow when he joined Manchester United.
Indeed, while Cole doesn’t necessarily get the plaudits for his incredible goalscoring prowess, make no mistake about it, in the 1990s, this man was one of the best strikers in the world.
His stats and accolades for United tell the story.

Cole did it all for United and produced in some huge moments for the Red Devils.
It was a huge shock when United splashed a then British-record £7m to sign Cole from Newcastle, but, undoubtedly, that was money well spent by Alex Ferguson’s side.
It’s been a while since United made a blockbuster signing like this, and they may need to break the bank this summer if they want to get back on track after a very disappointing season.
