Pep Guardiola hails one ‘fantastic’ part of Tottenham’s squad which is among the best he has ever seen

Although Tottenham Hotspur have become something of a ‘bogey’ side for Manchester City in recent seasons, Pep Guardiola’s side had very little difficulty during the first 45 minutes of their visit to N17 on Wednesday evening.

Man City dominated Tottenham, and owing to Jeremy Doku’s excellent work down the left, Guardiola’s team should have perhaps had the game dead and buried by half-time.

However, Guglielmo Vicario saved well against Erling Haaland after already being beaten by the Norwegian, and Spurs then improved thereafter in the second half.

Of course, Ange Postecoglou did make changes for the game, deciding to rest the likes of Son Heung-min, Dejan Kulusevski and Djed Spence.

And in truth, it was probably the latter who was missed the most, especially given that Doku was beating Pedro Porro at ease.

Pep Guardiola hails Tottenham’s squad depth despite Ange Postecoglou’s struggles

That being said, Guardiola made some eyebrow-raising comments about Tottenham’s squad depth when speaking to TNT Sports after full-time on Wednesday evening.

Prior to welcoming one or two players back recently, Postecoglou’s squad has been decimated by injuries this season – the Spurs boss has often been restricted to a bare eleven.

However, Guardiola declared after his side’s 1-0 win that Spurs had one of the best squad depths he’s ever seen.

Guardiola said: “I know it is not easy, we won just three times in this stadium in eight or nine years, so it has been tough and I know how good they are.

“Listen, this is one of the best depth of squads I’ve ever seen.

“The manager [Postecoglou] is exceptional. Kulusevski, Son, Spence on the bench and when they come with their impact, and the players in the first part were brilliant too.

“They are a fantastic team, so I’m really pleased for the victory today.”

Ange Postecoglou might not agree with Pep Guardiola

Of course, these comments are very interesting given that most Tottenham fans would probably argue otherwise.

Although Postecoglou has a very strong eleven when all are fit, high-quality replacements are still lacking in certain areas.

Spurs’ January business did help in that regard – Kevin Danso will now provide much more capable back-up to Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven for example.

But some will find it hard to agree that Tottenham have one of the best squads in the Premier League, let alone one of the best that Pep has ever seen.

That being said, Tottenham fans were seriously impressed with one player following his efforts against City despite the defeat.
