People at Tottenham think one player is so much more mature this season

Journalist Jack Pitt-Brooke has shared what people behind the scenes at Tottenham Hotspur have noticed about Cristian Romero since he was promoted to co-vice-captain ahead of this season.

Throughout his time in North London, there has been no doubt over Cristian Romero‘s quality. However, his temperament has been under the microscope at certain stages.

Romero was excellent during his first season with the club. But he was so poor last year. And his form for Tottenham was all the more baffling as he helped Argentina win the World Cup midway through the campaign.

Cristian Romero showing more maturity for Tottenham

Despite his struggles, Ange Postecoglou made the 25-year-old a prominent part of his plans. In fact, the Tottenham boss sprung a bit of a surprise by promoting the centre-back to co-vice-captain alongside James Maddison.

The decision has proved to be an inspired one however. Apart from a red card against Chelsea in November, Romero has barely made a mistake, only collecting four yellow cards in the top-flight. It was noted that Romero was not reacting to Crystal Palace players trying to wind him up at the weekend.

And speaking on The View From The Lane podcast, Jack Pitt-Brooke suggested that those at Hotspur Way have noticed Romero grow as a leader.

“The impression I get from people working at Spurs is that even inside the building, the ascension to the vice-captaincy has brought out a different side of Romero. Takes more responsibility, more mature, more of a leader,” he said.

Brilliant decision from Ange Postecoglou

Romero’s displays have been all the more impressive because he has been alongside a new partner this season. And obviously, Micky van de Ven is new to the Premier League this term.

Romero was unlikely to stay if Antonio Conte remained in charge. And that would have been difficult for Tottenham fans to deal with given that the Italian had struggled in North London.

Ange Postecoglou appears to be getting the best out of Romero this season. And that decision to make him the co-vice-captain has, so far, proved to be a masterstroke.
