Paul Merson's prediction could be about to come true, if Arsenal complete reported for Brighton's Ben White

Arsenal are reportedly closing in on a move to sign Brighton star Ben White this summer. Reports claim that the England ace is set to join for a fee of £45million, plus £5million in add-ons. Intriguingly, a prediction from Paul Merson about White last summer is about to come true, if he joins Arsenal.

White, 23, starred for Brighton last season. Having been a crucial part in Leeds gaining promotion to the Premier League – playing all 49 minutes of Leeds’ 2019-20 campaign – he returned to Brighton. Used in multiple positions, the two-time England star has caught the attention of Arsenal.

The Athletic claim that Arsenal are closing in on a £50million deal for White – but may have to wait until after Euro 2020 is over to get him. Last summer after his season at Leeds, Merson raved about White. He claimed that he has everything to get to the top level, and at Arsenal, he is about to do that.

Following a battle with Fulham’s Aleksandar Mitrovic, Merson was quoted by Sussex Live as saying: “I thought he was very good, he comes out with the ball, comfortable on the ball, I can see him playing at a high level. He kept Mitrovic very quiet. I thought he (White) was very good.”

White to Arsenal: Merson comments should encourage sceptical Gunners fans

Given White is set to become Arsenal’s third most-expensive signing – there is scepticism and understandably so. But he is a top, top defender that has sparkled in numerous positions. Holding midfield, the right of a back three, one of two centre-backs, even as a box-to-box midfielder.

The fact that Merson believes he can see him playing at a “high level”, shows just how good he can be. While many will argue that Arsenal are no longer a top club, the addition of White could turn them back into a top-six side. He finally ends their search for a long-term centre-back solution.
