'He's a goner': Paul Merson thinks 26-year-old star may well leave, after being linked with Liverpool

Paul Merson has predicted that Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips will be on his way out of the club, if the Whites are relegated this weekend.

Phillips has been one of the stars of the show for Leeds as they’ve enjoyed a rise from the Championship to one of the Premier League’s most exciting teams to watch. However, such has been his form that he’s attracted interest from elsewhere, with Liverpool and Manchester United both keen.

However, while those at Old Trafford might love to see Phillips in the red of United, Merson believes there is zero chance the England man goes there, albeit he believes an exit is likely.

“Kalvin Phillips’ future has been a major talking point as he has been linked with moves to a handful of Premier League clubs. If Leeds stay up, he’ll stay, but if they get relegated, I think he’s a goner. One thing is for sure, though – he’s not signing for Manchester United! 100%, no chance I can see that happening considering the history between the two teams,” Merson told Sportskeeda.

Phillips was one of the stars of Euro 2020 for England in the summer. Alongside Declan Rice in the middle of the park, Phillips helped form the bedrock of the Three Lions’ success.

Merson might not always get everyone on board with his opinions and comments, but he is spot on here with his assessement.

There is simply no way that Leeds keep hold of Kalvin Phillips if they go down. He’ll not want to play Championship football again, while Leeds will also need to sell some of their major assets. Phillips, of course, is one of those.

It’s a huge shame for Leeds fans, this. Phillips loves the club and is an outstanding player. However, this is what relegation brings, and they’ll simply have to rebuild.
