Paul Merson stunned by what £17m Tottenham player did just seconds into clash against Brighton

Paul Merson was left stunned by what Guglielmo Vicario did just seconds into today’s Premier League clash between Tottenham and Brighton.

The 55-year-old made the comments when speaking on Sky Sports Soccer Saturday.

So, what did Paul Merson say about Tottenham No.13 Guglielmo Vicario? Let’s take a look…

What Merson said about Vicario

Well, the Italian left the Londoner stunned within a minute of today’s Premier League clash in N17 after he somehow denied both Danny Welbeck and Kaoru Mitoma in remarkable fashion.

After catching the attention of Simon Thomas with a few excitable gasps, Merson said in disbelief: “Welbeck is away down the right, Bentancur comes steaming in, he throws a dummy on him, bends it left footed, it is a great save by the keeper.

“You think it’s gonna fall to Mitoma and he’s gonna tap it in, he doesn’t – what a save.”

Vicario was – however – beaten just moments later when Pascal Gross scored from the penalty spot in the 17th minute.

Nevertheless, the 27-year-old was not at fault for Brighton’s opener, and things would have been a lot worse had he not blocked the early strikes by Welbeck and Mitoma.

In 25 appearances so far this season before today’s meeting with Brighton, Vicario had kept six clean sheets while conceding 36 goals.

Tottenham found a diamond in Vicario

Vicario has been quite the signing by Tottenham – the north Londoners have replaced Hugo Lloris quite superbly.

The Udine-born glovesman arrived for just £17.2m in a deal from Empoli back in June, which is a bargain in the modern era when the likes of Andre Onana are moving for sums of £47.2m, for example.

Vicario is also just 27 years of age, so he could realistically be Tottenham’s No.1 for most of the next decade.

He may still have a bit of work to do when it comes to asserting himself from opposition corners – something he is improving on, in fairness – but there is no doubt that Tottenham found a real goalkeeping gem in Vicario.
