Ange Postecoglou says he was ‘really proud’ of his £17m Tottenham player last weekend

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou has been singing the praises of his goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario ahead of today’s clash with Brighton.

Vicario came under a bit of a fire last time out as Everton managed a 2-2 draw, with a clear tactic of trying to disrupt the Italian stopper throughout the game.

Everton threw bodies into the six yard box and eventually it told, as Jarrad Branthwaite bundled in a late equaliser.

However, rather than suggest his goalkeeper should be stronger or do more, Postecoglou has instead lauded Vicario for keeping at it, despite the threat of VAR hanging over his every move.

Ange Postecoglou delighted with Vicario

Speaking in his presser ahead of Brighton in quotes put out by Football.London, Postecoglou was full of praise for his new number one.

“I was really proud of Vic the other day. I think they had nine corners after we conceded and I think he dealt with just about every other one by coming out and actually having a crack at it rather than just standing on his line and saying, ‘No, I don’t want to get exposed’,” Postecoglou said.

“I can’t praise him highly enough over the way he handled it, and the whole thing where people say ‘you’ve got to be stronger’, well, what does that mean? If he pushes or does anything to a player, with VAR, you’ve got no chance. You’re going to get a penalty against you.”

Vicario has been some signing

When you think of some of the fees that get splashed around it’s quite amazing that Vicario only cost Tottenham around £17m in the summer.

The Italian stopper has been a revelation in this Spurs side and looks every bit the quality operator they needed to replace Hugo Lloris.

As Ange says here, Vicario shows a bravery that the top goalkeepers all have and while there were some nervy moments last weekend, he did do well in the main.

Brighton at home should be a bit calmer for him this weekend and if he plays well, Tottenham will likely win the game.
