Paul Merson has shared what would shock him from Arsenal in the January transfer window, with Mikel Arteta’s men yet to make a signing this month.

It has certainly been a very slow start to the month across the Premier League. Apart from Tottenham, there has barely been any movement for any club so far.

Arsenal are one of those yet to do anything significant. The Gunners are currently on a run of one win in their last seven games in all competitions. And they have only scored five goals in that run.

Paul Merson doesn’t expect Arsenal to sign anyone in January

Ian Wright expressed his concern about the form of the front four. And given that Arsenal find themselves in the Premier League title picture once again – as well as the knockout stages of the Champions League – some may have expected that they would be open to doing business.

However, speaking to Sportskeeda, Paul Merson suggested that if they were going to bring anyone in to strengthen the first-team, the deal would have been already done by now.

“In terms of their January transfer window, I’d be shocked if they went in and bought someone now. If they had plans of dipping into the transfer market, why couldn’t they have done so earlier in the month? This is why I don’t think they’ll pursue a deal for Ivan Toney – who is set to return to competitive action this week after eight months,” he said.

“Arteta’s current situation at Arsenal reminds me of the latter part of Arsene Wenger’s stint. Everyone knew at the time that Wenger needed a central defender, but he was a bit stubborn and refused to dip into the transfer market. Arteta needs a centre forward now to give his side a welcome boost in the title race, but he has thus far remained reluctant to sign one.”

Obviously, Arsenal have to be conscious of Profit and Sustainability rules. And they have spent a lot on the squad over the last few years. So there may not be much to invest this month.

But fans do not know the ins and outs of the financial situation. So it can be hard to think of the bigger picture when it does feel as though Arsenal have not moved forward this season.

It would certainly be tough to take if they fall short again this term. So there may be an element of resentment if they do not sign anyone this month.
