Paul Merson has delivered his honest verdict on Newcastle United’s upcoming game against Southampton on Sunday and the Englishman’s prediction revolves around one player – Allan Saint-Maximin.
The Frenchman was absolutely incredible against Manchester United earlier this week. He scored a stunning goal and alongside Joelinton, he was the best player on the pitch.
Eddie Howe had to bring Saint-Maximin off due to an injury in the 83rd minute of the game. The Magpies boss confirmed post-match that his injury was serious enough to withdraw him, and he is now a big doubt for the game against the Saints on Sunday.
Merson believes that Newcastle have no chance of winning the game if Saint-Maximin is ruled out of the fixture. If the Frenchman does feature, the pundit believes it’ll be a draw.
Paul Merson: Newcastle cannot win without Saint-Maximin
The Englishman wrote in his column on Sportskeeda: “If Allan Saint-Maximin doesn’t feature, I don’t think Newcastle United will get much out of the game.
“Southampton won’t blow them away, but they should have enough to get all three points at home if the Frenchman misses out.
“If he plays, I think Newcastle will get at least a point but if he doesn’t, I think the home side will go on to win this one.
“Prediction 1: Southampton 1-1 Newcastle United (if Saint-Maximin plays). Prediction 2: Southampton 2-0 Newcastle United (if Saint-Maximin misses out)”

TBR View:
Saint-Maximin, signed by Steve Bruce in the summer of 2019, has become a fan favourite at St. James’ Park. He is a joy to watch if you’re a Newcastle fan and absolute nightmare to defend against.
If he starts, he will be Newcastle’s most important player, but he remains a big doubt due to the injury he picked up against Manchester United.
However, even without Saint-Maximin, Newcastle can get the better of the Saints. Southampton have had their problems this season as well and they’ve won just one of their least five league games.
Newcastle have improved immensely under Howe and if his lads play like they did against Manchester United, they will most likely pick up all three points.
