Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo has been described by Paul Merson as a “top-class talent” whose last goal was a thing of beauty.

Merson, writing on Sportskeeda, claimed that “you wouldn’t hear the end of it” had the Red Devils talent’s goal been scored by Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Manchester United academy graduate has become a fixture in the Red Devils starting XI this season after making his first Premier League start in November.

And earlier this month, Mainoo scored his first Premier League goal, a superb solo effort late on against Wolves to hand Manchester United a dramatic 4-3 win.

The 18-year-old took hold of the ball just inside the final third, weaved his way through the Wolves defence and into the box, cut inside and curled home a superb effort.

Kobbie Mainoo ‘a bright spark’ for Manchester United

Wondergoal aside, Mainoo has been superb for Manchester United in terms of overall play, which has led to rumours of a new contract in the pipeline.

“Kobbie Mainoo’s emergence has been a bright spark for Manchester United,” Merson wrote ahead of the Red Devils’ meeting with Aston Villa.

“The lad was a bit nervous when he first came into the team, but he has really imposed himself in recent weeks and looks like a top-class talent.

“The goal he scored the other day against Wolves was absolutely amazing – if Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo had scored such a goal, you wouldn’t hear the end of it.”

Sutton went on to predict a 2-2 draw between Villa and Man United in Birmingham.

It’s always great to see an academy talent make the breakthrough at a huge club like Manchester United.

Mainoo is a player of the highest calibre with an incredible future ahead of him, and it’ll be exciting to see how he continues to develop for club and for country.
