Paul Merson says Liverpool are responsible for something that’s ‘unheard of’ in football

Liverpool have enjoyed a superb season so far, sitting top of both the Premier League table and the Champions League standings.

In addition, the Reds are in the Carabao Cup semi-finals and will likely be among the favourites to win the FA Cup when they enter at the third-round stage.

Arne Slot has been a revelation at Liverpool since taking the reins from Jurgen Klopp in the summer and building on the great work of his predecessor.

However, Paul Merson has now claimed that the Reds have allowed something to happen at Anfield that is practically “unheard of” in this day and age.

Paul Merson not impressed with Liverpool trio’s expiring contract situation

Merson has criticised Liverpool for allowing Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah to enter the last six months of their respective contracts at Anfield.

All three players have been key for the Reds for a number of years now, helping the club win a multitude of trophies including the Premier League title and the Champions League.

Merson, writing on Sky Sports, suggested that Liverpool should not have got themselves in this position and now reckons keeping two of the three would be “the biggest result ever”.

He wrote: “I think all three of Trent, Van Dijk and Salah have been an absolute credit if I’m being honest.

“I think for them to have their contracts whittled down to six months left, how that ever happens in football, it’s criminal.

“To have three of your best players’ contracts all end in six months is just it’s unheard of, really.

“I can’t remember anywhere else where you’ve had three top, top, top players having their contracts run out.

“If they could keep two of the three, they’ve had the biggest result ever. I thought they’d lose all three of them.

“If Trent goes but they can keep Van Dijk and Salah, I think they’ve had the biggest result ever.

“But for Liverpool to find themselves in that position, as I say, in football, it’s criminal.”

The latest on Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah contracts

A few days ago, Fabrizio Romano claimed on his YouTube channel that Liverpool are “pushing” to agree new deals with all three players.

The transfer insider has also reported that the Reds have confidence they’ll thrash out agreements with Van Dijk and Salah in particular.

“Behind the scenes Liverpool insist they are negotiating with all three players – Van Dijk, Salah and Alexander-Arnold,” said Romano.

“They are absolutely pushing with all of them and especially with Van Dijk and Salah Liverpool maintain their confidence to find a way, to find an agreement.

“But at the moment, still no breakthrough in negotiations. So the talks continue and Liverpool maintain that they keep insisting, they keep talking. But at the moment there is no green light.

“For Trent, as I told you several times, Real Madrid are there, but still nothing done or agreed [between Alexander-Arnold and Real Madrid].”

TBR Football’s Graeme Bailey recently revealed that Liverpool rejected an approach from Real Madrid for Alexander-Arnold.
