Both Tottenham Hotspur and Everton will look to get their first win of the new Premier League season when they lock horns in north London on Saturday.
Spurs were held to a 1-1 draw by Leicester City at the King Power Stadium on the opening weekend as Jamie Vardy canceled out Pedro Porro’s first-half header.
Everton, on the other hand, were comfortably dispatched 3-0 by Brighton & Hove Albion at Goodison Park as Fabian Hurzeler made quite the impression in his first game in charge of the Seagulls.
As the two teams prepare to do battle at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Paul Merson believes Ange Postecoglou’s side will have too much in the locker for Everton.
Paul Merson predicts Tottenham win against Everton
Merson feels Tottenham failed to make their first-half momentum count against Leicester as they allowed the Foxes to grow into the game after the interval
“I thought Spurs were outstanding in the first half against Leicester,” Merson wrote in his column for Sportskeeda.
“However, they did not put the game to bed and it cost them three points. It must have been a very disappointing result for Spurs. They have got to be consistent throughout the 90 minutes. At the moment, they play good only in patches during games and that has to change.”

However, he thinks Tottenham won’t miss as many chances as they did against Leicester, predicting a 2-0 win for the home side to compound Sean Dyche’s misery at the start of the season.
Merson continued: “If they had scored the second goal against Leicester, I think it could’ve even been 4-0 or 5-0. Despite that disappointment, I’m backing Spurs to get a win even though it wouldn’t come easy.
“Everton can make it hard for them, but I just don’t see Tottenham missing that many chances again. Looks like it’ll be another long season for Sean Dyche’s Everton.”
Chris Sutton also believes Tottenham will beat Everton this weekend, indicating that Spurs head into the game as overwhelming favourites.
Tottenham and Everton could experience contrasting fortunes this season
Tottenham finished fifth last season, representing a decent return for the club under their new manager.
Postecoglou has imprinted an exciting brand of football at the club and has been backed adequately in the transfer market, with Dominic Solanke the pick of their four summer signings.
They have shown signs of improvement and will look to build on the foundation set since the Australian’s arrival last summer.
The Toffees, on the other hand, are struggling on and off the pitch.
John Textor is in talks with Everton owner Farhad Moshiri over a proposed takeover as he aims to save the club from a state of financial turmoil.
On the pitch, they were well beaten at home by a Brighton side playing their first competitive game under their new manager, a result that is unlikely to have filled their fans with optimism for the new campaign.
If things don’t change quickly in the coming weeks, Dyche could find himself in another relegation battle, having narrowly avoided the drop last season.
