Paul Merson makes England prediction about Trent Alexander-Arnold

Paul Merson is predicting that England manager Gareth Southgate may give Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold some minutes in midfield in the two warm up games before Euro 2020.

Alexander-Arnold is included in England’s preliminary 33-man squad, which will be cut down to 26 next week.

If you consider the 22-year-old defender was left out of the last international squad, he’s done very well to get back into the fold with his superb club form.

Pundit Merson feels that Alexander-Arnold may be included by England as an extra midfield option. He reckons Southgate will look at the right-back in a midfield berth in upcoming games.

The Three Lions boss has friendlies against Austria and Romania before Euro 2020 begins on 13 June.

“The squad he’s picked is heavy on defenders and forwards, and very light in midfield,” Merson wrote for the Daily Star.

“Jordan Henderson and Kalvin Phillips are touch and go, and Declan Rice isn’t long back from an injury.

“Maybe that’s why he’s talking about Trent Alexander-Arnold playing there in an emergency – we might even see it in one of the friendlies next week.”

Forget Alexander-Arnold in England midfield, Reece James is the utility man

Alexander-Arnold must be included in the England squad. However, he should be there on merit as a right-back.

Him, Reece James and Kyle Walker are three outstanding right-backs that should all be included.

Alexander-Arnold’s technique is a reason why many suggest he could play in midfield. However, he’s a world class full-back that has to be pushing for a starting XI spot.

Meanwhile, if England need emergency cover in midfield, Chelsea’s James is the man to do it.

James played games as a central midfielder out on loan at Wigan Athletic earlier in his career. Additionally, he’s had minutes in that role more recently with Chelsea.
