Paul Merson describes ‘mind-blowing’ star as ‘the Frank Lampard of Liverpool’

Arne Slot made an impressive start to life as Liverpool manager after opening their Premier League campaign with a 2-0 win over Ipswich Town.

The newly-promoted side came charging out of the blocks as expected but Arne Slot‘s side maintained their composure and the Dutchman rallied his Liverpool players at the break ahead of a much-improved second-half performance.

There were a number of positives to take from Liverpool’s first performance under Slot, including Mohamed Salah‘s display on the right wing.

As was often the case during Jurgen Klopp’s tenure, Salah ran the show for the Reds and he etched his name onto the scoresheet in the second half to double their lead.

There have been a few question marks over Salah’s future at Liverpool, but if there were any concerns that his performance levels would drop this season he answered his critics in emphatic fashion.

Paul Merson on ‘mind-blowing’ Mohamed Salah

There were several standout performers in Liverpool’s opening win, with Trent Alexander-Arnold praised by Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer for his role in the side.

But it was Salah – once again – who stood out among the rest and Paul Merson was full of compliments for the 32-year-old.

Via Sky Sports, Merson wrote: “You can’t talk highly enough of Salah – how many goals is that now and he plays right wing? He’s a right winger, it is just mind-blowing.

“He does it every season and he’s the Frank Lampard of Liverpool, but playing right wing!

“Who puts up figures like that playing on the right wing? Not too many, he is a one-off, extraordinary and you can’t replace those players. He turns up every week, he’s fit and he never misses a load of games.”

Mohamed Salah at Liverpool this season

Liverpool’s lack of activity in the transfer market has been a big talking point, but even more important than new signings for Liverpool is keeping hold of their biggest players.

Salah has been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia, but it is almost impossible to put a price on such an essential player.

Another huge name who was linked with an exit was Virgil van Dijk, who attracted interest from the Saudi Pro League. Keeping hold of the star duo had a bigger impact than any new signing could have.

Slot will hope that Salah can now continue his bright form in their upcoming Premier League clashes – starting with Brentford on Sunday.
