Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer seriously impressed by ‘unbelievable’ Liverpool player vs Ipswich

Arne Slot’s first official game as Liverpool manager should provide a lot of confidence for what the Dutchman can achieve at Anfield moving forwards.

Liverpool weathered Ipswich Town’s early storm without too much difficulty, and then significantly upped their game in the second half.

As has often been the case during the Jurgen Klopp era, Mohamed Salah was the main protagonist, fresh in his performance as well as his new look.

Salah combined with Diogo Jota really effectively in the second 45, securing three points for Liverpool in what could have turned out to be a very tricky game to win.

Ryan Gravenberch also deserves credit for his work as Slot’s deepest lying midfielder – a position that will be scrutinised all season long unless a new signing comes in.

Slot’s compatriot coped with the task well, even if he wasn’t spectacular in the first half.

But like the rest of the Liverpool team, Gravenberch began to boss proceedings in the second period.

That being said, it was a different player who both Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer were praising on ‘The Rest Is Football’ podcast.

Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer left in awe of Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold

The pair said some incredibly complimentary words about Trent Alexander-Arnold on the podcast, who delivered a slightly understated performance in truth.

Trent’s defensive work was effective in the first half and he then orchestrated Liverpool’s attack down the right-hand side so admirably in the second, unlucky not to be credited with an assist.

Speaking about his performance, Lineker once again questioned why the Liverpool defender hasn’t played a bigger role for his country.

Lineker said: “I have to say, I still love watching Trent Alexander-Arnold play. He’s a joy. How can there not be a place for him in the national side?

“Maybe there will be in the future. He’s just so good.”

Shearer then added: “It was a masterclass in crossing and passing yesterday. He was unbelievable in that second half.”

Of course, Trent does look set for an extraordinary season at Liverpool if he can avoid the injury disruption of last term.

But all of his success at Anfield this season may be marred by rumours of Trent leaving Liverpool for Real Madrid – talk that refuses to go away.
