Tottenham Hotspur have long been linked with a move for Villarreal defender Pau Torres, who has had another excellent season in Spain.

Antonio Conte’s side are desperate to sign a new left-sided central defender this summer. Ben Davies has done a decent job when he has played there, but for Spurs to reach the top, they need someone much, much better.

Torres is one player who has been on Fabio Paratici’s shortlist for a while now. Spurs tried extremely hard to sign him and even made progress in talks with Villarreal last summer. However, the Spaniard ended up rejecting a move to North London in the end.

This summer, Torres is very likely to leave Villarreal, and Spurs now have a trump card to play if they decide to make a move for him again.

Tottenham should try Giovani Lo Celso – Pau Torres swap deal

Conte decided that Giovani Lo Celso was not in his plans in the January transfer window. The Argentine was forced to leave Spurs, and he ended up moving to Villarreal on loan.

Lo Celso has arguably been the Yellow Submarine’s best player since. He has been absolutely incredible, and he’s one of the biggest reasons why Villarreal knocked out Juventus and Bayern Munich, and went as far as the semi-finals of the Champions League.

When Unai Emery’s side faced Liverpool last week, Tottenham scouts were reportedly in attendance watching Pau Torres with a view of making another move to sign him this summer.

To make things simple – Tottenham want Torres and Villareal are really happy with Lo Celso. Swap deals are never easy in the modern game, but if both parties really want this to happen, a deal should be a fairly straightforward one to complete before the start of next season.

Torres would be a sensational signing for Spurs

Since the start of last season, Torres has arguably been the best Spanish defender in the world.

The Villarreal man, still only 25, led his boyhood club to Europa League glory last season and almost got them over to the final of the Champions League this time around.

Torres rejected Tottenham last summer for one reason only – to play in the Champions League with his beloved Villarreal. Now that the dream is complete, he’s expected to move on, and La Razon claim he’ll be sold for £50 million.

That price may prove to be a bit too steep for Spurs, but including a talented player like Lo Celso in the deal should bring that fee down quite considerably.
