Jenas says Conte was going mad at Richarlison in Tottenham tie

Jermaine Jenas has told BT Sport (broadcast on 7/8; 8:43) that he noticed that Antonio Conte was going mad at Richarlison during the latter stages of the first-half of Tottenham Hotspur’s clash with Marseille on Wednesday.

Spurs endured a miserable time before the break in their Champions League opener. They failed to ask too many questions of the Ligue 1 side. In fact, it was the visitors who looked more likely to score during the first 45 minutes.

Perhaps surprisingly, Richarlison was given the chance to keep his place in the starting lineup. The Brazilian started ahead of Dejan Kulusevski in North London.

But he was not initially able to make the most of the opportunity. In fact, it seems that Conte was particularly unhappy about his performance during the first-half.

There was one situation when Richarlison failed to get himself in a position to retain possession. And that prompted Conte to lose his cool on the touchline. Jenas suggested that the summer signing really managed to wind his manager up.

“Conte’s going mad down there, because that’s a couple of occasions now where Richarlison has just not got himself over far enough to maintain that when they nick it round the corner. He’s on the wrong side,” he told BT Sport.

Conte sets such high standards. And he would have been furious with how his side played in that first-half.

Richarlison is still finding his feet at Tottenham. He has had to bide his time in the opening weeks of the campaign. But there have been glimpses of what he can do – with the forward scoring both of the decisive goals after the break.

However, he still needs more time to understand what Conte wants from him. He is also playing alongside the likes of Harry Kane, Son Heung-min and Kulusevski. These are players who are on another level to what he is used to at club level.

It will click for him at Spurs. But it will not necessarily always be an easy transition.
