‘Oozed class’, ’8/10’: Arsenal star’s display raved about by country’s national media
Arsenal star Kieran Tierney has been given huge praise from the national media in Scotland after his Euro 2020 performance on Friday night.
The Gunners defender helped preserve a clean sheet for Scotland in their 0-0 draw against England at Wembley Stadium.
Tierney missed the opening group stage match of the Euros because of a calf problem. However, it’s clear that his return to the XI gave the entire Scotland team a lift.
They now prepare for the final group match against Croatia knowing that there is still a chance they can qualify for the knockout rounds.
Scottish media rated Tierney an 8/10 for his display against England, as well as giving a glowing review.
The 24-year-old impressed as the left-sided centre-back in a back three with a full-blooded display.
“Tremendous psychological boost to have him back. FA Cup winner here. Right foot volley from 25-yards. Stunning overlap and cross for O’Donnell chance. Oozed class,” Scottish Sun wrote.
Tierney a Scotland talisman
It’s widely agreed that Tierney is one of the elite players in the Scotland camp, but that was reemphasised with the improvement of the team with him in it.
He’s an excellent left-back at club level for Arsenal, but he slots in as a centre-back for his country.
Tierney, along with his Scotland teammates, put everything into the England match and at least deserved their points.
It’s the challenge now to take that same mentality into a Croatia fixture which is theoretically a knockout match in itself.
