‘Klopp would love him’, ‘Perfect signing’: Some Liverpool fans rave about PL midfielder’s Euro display
John McGinn was part of a Scotland side that impressed against England on Friday night – and some Liverpool fans on Twitter were raving about the Aston Villa midfielder’s international performance.
Scotland earned a point in the Euro 2020 group stage match at Wembley Stadium against rivals England. The 0-0 draw means that they are still in with a chance of qualifying for the knockout rounds.
McGinn delivered an all-action display in the centre of the park.
Firstly, the Villa ace was aggressive with his pressing and desire to win the ball back when out of possession. Secondly, the 26-year-old showed the kind of stamina in a display for his country that he does on a weekly basis for his club. Finally, he was adding some extra quality when on the ball with the ambition to play forward.
The box-to-box midfielder is undoubtedly a key performer for Scotland. Similarly, he has a identical role at Villa in the Premier League.
He ended up with nine goal contributions in 37 league appearances last season.
However, a lot of his game can’t be solely judged on numbers.
The tireless work-rate to cover every blade of grass is majorly impressive, so his Villa and Scotland teammates must love playing alongside him.
His £2million signing from Hibernian back in 2018 has to be one of the biggest bargains in recent transfer windows.
Could John McGinn be Georginio Wijnaldum replacement
For Liverpool, they have just lost midfielder Wijnaldum from their engine room.
The 30-year-old is joining Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer officially on 1 July and Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp needs to work out how to replace him.
A selection of Reds supporters on social media have put forward McGinn as somebody that they should possibly considering targeting.
There are certainly similarities between the Villa ace and Wijnaldum.
It would be a massive step up for McGinn if Liverpool were to take a look at signing him, but he’s shown he’s good enough at both club and international level.
However, performing to a consistently high level at Anfield could be a stretch too far.
One thing worth pointing out though is that a lot of Liverpool’s current superstars weren’t signed when they were at the top of the game.
The likes of Virgil van Dijk, Andy Robertson and Wijnaldum developed into world-class players.
The Merseyside club have already gone big this summer by signing highly-rated centre-back Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig, so it’ll be intriguing to see if they plan on doing any more business.
Jurgen Klopp’s side lost their Premier League title to rivals Manchester City, but with a fully fit squad they should be back competing for all silverware across the board.
It’s a big compliment to McGinn that Liverpool fans are discussing him after his Euro performance for Scotland. But, the Villa supporters are going to hope they keep him in the heart of their starting XI as they have a team who can threaten the European positions next year.
