Last night wasn’t great for Leeds United by any means but a couple of Whites players emerged with some credit, Raphinha amongst them.
Marcelo Bielsa’s charges hosted West Ham at Elland Road in the first game of matchweek 12 and, though they took the lead, went on to lose 2-1.
Mateusz Klich opened the scoring for Leeds from the penalty spot after just six minutes at the second time of asking.
VAR had ruled that Hammers keeper Lukasz Fabianski, who brought down Patrick Bamford to give away the spot kick, to be off his line in saving the initial effort.
However, Leeds’ issues in defending set pieces came to the fore once again as Tomas Soucek brought the Hammers level in the 25th minute with a header from Jarrod Bowen’s corner.
Angelo Ogbonna sealed all three points 10 minutes from time with a header of his own from an Aaron Cresswell delivery – Leeds’ seventh set-piece goal concession this term.
Goalkeeper Illan Meslier won praise for his efforts on the night and Luke Ayling was also impressive, while further up the pitch, some Whites fans were pleased with Raphinha’s performance.
The 23-year-old looked lively and always sought to make something happen going forward, giving the West Ham backline problems and weighing in with several decent crosses and corners.
Here is what some Leeds supporters were saying on social media about the £28,000-a-week summer signing:
Raphinha, by miles

Raphinha? Only one doing anything going forward

100% agree with meslier two top draw saves. Maybe raphinha as he always wanted to go forward. Shacks looked decent going forward. That’s all that stood out for me

Never mind my last tweet. I misread yours. Yes, you are correct. All BUT those players were poor tonight. Forward line was awful overall, except Raphinha who looked lively. Apart from his pass in the 2nd minute, Cooper had a mare. Klich looked unwell!

Frustrating night, poor performance, the conceding from set pieces is really worrying now. Only plus for me is raphinha, looks a great talent, think he will be a top player. I’m sure we will work hard and bounce back, keep the faith no need to hit the panic button👍 #lufc 💙

Raphinha for me, didn’t stop running or trying to create.
