'One of the very best players in the world' would choose Spurs over Newcastle - report

Reported Tottenham Hotspur target Philippe Coutinho would choose Spurs over Newcastle, according to a report.

Tottenham are one of several clubs who have been linked with the Brazil international in recent months.

As well as Spurs, the likes of Arsenal and Newcastle have apparently been eyeing Coutinho.

The 29-year-old has struggled at Barcelona since his big-money move from Liverpool in 2018.

Why We Shouldn't Compare Footballers Based On Their Positions

Indeed, his biggest success since then came as a loanee in Bayern Munich’s Champions League-winning squad.

Barca are reportedly eager to trim their wage bill this month, while Coutinho apparently wants a move away.

According to MD, Barca are in talks with the Brazilian’s representatives ‘to reach an agreement that benefits both parties’.

Coutinho is “receiving offers”, but he prioritises “the sporting project”, adds the Spanish outlet.

They also claim that, “between Tottenham and Newcastle United”, Coutinho “would choose Spurs”.

Could Spurs land “magical” player in 2022?

Coutinho may have had a tough time at Barca, but there’s no doubt he’s still an incredible player.

His displays for Bayern in 2020 showed he’s still very much got it, and just needs a change of scenery.

Roberto Firmino, who played alongside Coutinho at Liverpool between 2015 and 2018, hailed his fellow Brazilian after a 5-0 win over Bolivia in 2020.

“He’s phenomenal,” the Anfield ace told Fifa.com.

“You simply can’t say that he’s not a magician. He has magical powers.

“He produces plays that don’t exist, that you couldn’t make up.

“You always have to watch replays of his plays to understand what he’s done. He’s an unbelievable player.

“I’m a huge fan of his. He’s one of the very best players in the world.”
