English clubs’ hopes of bringing in Philippe Coutinho during January have been boosted by news that a much-hyped return to Brazil won’t be happening.

According to Goal, Coutinho is pushing for a move to England after teams in South America were put off by his huge wages. Per Goal, those wages are said to be around the £12.5m-a-year mark.

Coutinho’s agents are said to be in talks with a number of English clubs about a move. Tottenham are one of the club who have reportedly been offered the former Liverpool man. It was also claimed last week that Coutinho preferred a move to Arsenal, and would reject advances from other interested clubs – such as Newcastle – if the Gunners came calling.

The Brazilian star has endured a miserable time of things since moving to Spain from Liverpool. Despite costing more than £140m, Coutinho has failed to deliver. Indeed, his biggest success away from Anfield came when he was part of Bayern Munich’s Champions League winning squad during a loan spell.

Coutinho is now widely expected to wind up back in the Premier League. However, where and who with, seems to be something nobody quite knows as yet.

TBR’s View: Clubs Taking A Risk With Coutinho Move

We all know Philippe Coutinho possesses tremendous quality. But the fact remains he’s just not done it for years now.

That means whoever takes him on, is banking on former glories coming to the fore. If Coutinho could rediscover his best form, then someone is getting a fine player. But the issue remains in that getting those performances out of him could be difficult.

On paper, he doesn’t seem to fit either Arsenal or Tottenham. Both are hard-working and pressing teams, and both have players already in those positions. Newcastle might be a good fit, but even there, he’d need to hit the ground running.
