Oliver Skipp lauds Japhet Tanganga display in Spurs win against Manchester City
Oliver Skipp has told Spurs’ official website that it was amazing to see how Japhet Tanganga played in their opening day win over Manchester City having played alongside the defender for around a decade.
Nuno Espirito Santo’s men kicked off the campaign in some style at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Much of the build-up centred around Harry Kane amid speculation that he could leave for the Premier League champions.
But Spurs produced a stunning performance. And Son Heung-min went on to score the only goal as they beat Pep Guardiola’s side.
A number of players were outstanding in the victory. But perhaps no player produced a more memorable display than Tanganga.
The right-back was colossal up against the likes of Raheem Sterling and Jack Grealish. It was a display that left plenty of fans lauding the 22-year-old.
And Skipp has suggested that that display from his teammate stuck with him as he recalled the emotions of that day.
“That was one of the best atmospheres I’ve experienced. I remember thinking, ‘wow, this is what it means to everyone’,” he told Tottenham’s official website.
“I’ve spoken to Japhet (Tanganga) about it as well, we’ve played together a lot over the years, since the age of 10, 11, and seeing him play as he did against Manchester City was amazing.”
Skipp and Tanganga showing they could be Spurs stalwarts for years to come
What has been particularly encouraging about the start of Nuno’s tenure is that he has not been afraid to put faith in the younger players.
And he has been vindicated emphatically.
Skipp has been superb alongside Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in the middle of the park.
Tanganga meanwhile, has shown what an asset he is defensively. And he can surely expect to retain a prominent role – even with the arrival of Emerson Royal.
The pair have shown that they have the potential to be key men for years to come.
