‘Number one’: TalkSPORT pundit says £180k-a-week Liverpool man is the best player in the world in his position

Although the focus right now is still on the World Cup, Liverpool fans will still have one eye on club football returning.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have flown out to Dubai today for a training camp before the season resumes.

Speaking on TalkSPORT (4/12 8:55am), pundit Tony Cascarino was discussing one of Liverpool’s stars.

Klopp only lost seven of his first team squad to World Cup call-ups.

This should benefit the Reds when the season restarts, with a number of his key players enjoying a well-earned rest.

The Liverpool manager has called up reserve team ‘keeper Harvey Davies to the squad.

The Athletic have also reported that Luis Diaz might be available for Liverpool’s friendlies in Dubai.

This is all good news for Klopp, but he’ll be hoping his players at the World Cup return from Qatar unscathed.

One player who is unlikely to return injured is Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The full-back was brought on as a substitute against Wales, but was unused against Iran and the USA.

Unless Southgate has a sudden change of heart, he’s unlikely to play many minutes in the knockout stages.

However, Cascarino believes that Alexander-Arnold is the best player in the world in his position.

Alexander-Arnold is the best attacking right-back – Cascarino

Cascarino was discussing Alexander-Arnold’s comments about his work-rate on TalkSPORT.

Alexander-Arnold stated it was a ‘lazy opinion’ to criticise his defending.

The TalkSPORT disagreed, and insisted it wasn’t an attack on the full-back: “Well it’s not lazy, and it’s not an attack on him.

“Trent is an amazing footballer going forward, he’s one of the world’s best at getting in positions, creating chances.

“With that, he can be exploited because he leaves space because he’s such an attack-minded full-back.

“Trent is up there with the very best, if you said the world’s best right wing-back, or right-back as an attacking player, Trent is your number one.

“But I can’t sit here and say, ‘well you can also sometimes get in behind Trent because he’s so adventurous’ because you can.

“I’ve seen Liverpool enough this season, Napoli away, Fulham away, and many other games where teams have taken advantage of that.

“There’s hardly any players in the world, I’m talking central midfielders, attack-minded number 10s, who can pass the ball like Trent.

“It’s incredible his delivery, outside the boot, 40-yard passes, he can do everything.”

The £180,000-a-week defender has faced plenty of criticism about his defensive performances.

However, it’s hard to disagree with Cascarino that Alexander-Arnold is one of, if not the best, attacking right full-back.

It will be interesting to see if Southgate does end up giving the 24-year-old a chance tonight.

Otherwise, Klopp may be more worried about his match sharpness than his fitness when he returns to Liverpool.
