‘Not trading Champions League for us’: Some Newcastle fans react to links with 25-goal forward
Newcastle United are being linked with forward Wout Weghorst – and some of the club’s fans on Twitter have responded to claim there is no chance he’ll end up at St James’ Park.
Weghorst, 28, is a highly-rated striker that has just enjoyed a great individual season with German club Wolfsburg, so English teams are eying him.
According to the Athletic, Newcastle are among those interested in him alongside Premier League rivals West Ham and Tottenham.
He exit may be granted if a €30million (£26million) asking price is met during this transfer window.
Newcastle and Spurs were reportedly keen last summer, too.
Weghorst scored 25 goals in 41 games across all competitions this campaign. Notably, his 20 league goals helped Wolfsburg qualify for next season’s Champions League.
The centre-forward is now away on international duty with the Netherlands at Euro 2020. He scored in the final warm up game before the competition starts.
Weghorst shouldn’t be a Newcastle priority
A selection of Newcastle supporters on social media believe Weghorst is beyond their reach because of Wolfsburg’s Champions League status.
Regardless, it makes little sense for the Toon to go big on a centre-forward.
They could do with attacking help to support talisman Callum Wilson, but the main bulk of any money spent should be in the midfield.
Additionally, everyone would love Joe Willock back at St James’ Park.
