Premier League legend Ian Wright is absolutely blown away by how good Kieran Trippier has been for Newcastle United since his arrival last month.

The Magpies were expected by everyone to go big in January but nobody really would’ve predicted their right-back to make the most noise on the pitch. Trippier has surprised everyone in recent weeks.

The Englishman played a massive part in each of Newcastle’s last three wins. He helped them keep a clean sheet against Leeds United before scoring back to back free-kicks against Everton and Aston Villa.

That has pushed the Toon above the relegation zone and Wright is in awe of Trippier’s impact.

Ian Wright: Nobody expected Trippier to have this big an impact

Speaking on his podcast this week, the Arsenal and England legend said: “No one could tell me that Kieran Trippier was going to be the face of Newcastle’s change.

“No-one could say that a 30-year-old right-back was going to be able to come into Newcastle and change it like he has. I have to give this man flowers.

“I think Newcastle with those three wins, it’s saved them. I look at Norwich and I tell you who I really worry for – Brentford.

“I thought they may have had enough points to keep them in a place where they might have been okay but…”

Have Newcastle done enough to survive?

Trippier, labelled as ‘outstanding‘ by Micah Richards, really has helped Newcastle get out of the hole they are in, but he will be out for a while after picking up an injury.

The Magpies have done really well up to this point, but the business end of the season is still a few weeks away.

Eddie Howe’s side are now four points clear of the drop zone and they are the favourites among the relegation-threatened teams to survive.

However, they just cannot rest on the last few weeks. They have to go out and perform the same way every game and they are more than capable of doing that. However, it has to be said that Trippier’s injury is a really big blow.
