Alan Shearer says Newcastle have an incredibly ‘commanding’ player in their ranks

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has named Magpies defender Dan Burn in his latest Premier League Team of the Week.

The 29-year-old joined Newcastle on transfer deadline day, the Magpies paying Brighton £13million for his services.

Eddie Howe gave Burn his debut in Sunday’s Premier League meeting against Aston Villa at St James’ Park.

The Newcastle newcomer replaced captain Jamaal Lascelles, who felt unwell in the days leading up to the game.

Burn enjoyed a sensational debut for his boyhood club en route to a 1-0 win over Steven Gerrard’s side.

He won every battle and every header, led the back line superbly, and showed impressive fight and determination.

Burn helped Newcastle keep a clean sheet and record a third Premier League win in a row to move four points clear of the relegation zone.

Shearer lauded the 6ft 7in colossus after the game on Twitter:

And on Monday, he named Burn in his latest Premier League XI:

“What a moment for the Geordie,” Shearer wrote on the Premier League website.

“A commanding display on his debut for his boyhood club.”

Shearer was one of several pundits to laud Burn after his display.

Gary Neville said on Sky Sports (13/2/22, 15:48): “He’s been the best Newcastle player by a mile, Dan Burn.

“He’s brought real composure at the back, he’s leading that line, waving Schar up. All his work’s been really good.”

And BBC Sport pundit Garth Crooks wrote: “Burn is a snip at £13m, while his debut for Newcastle against Aston Villa proved just how effective he can be.

“He can play almost anywhere across the back four and seems like just what the Magpies need to tighten things up at the back. A very impressive debut.”

With Kieran Trippier now on the sidelines, the onus could well be on Burn to provide leadership at the back.

After such a great debut, Howe will have a real selection headache on his hands.
