Newcastle will have to 'smash their wage structure' to sign Arsenal target Tielemans

Youri Tielemans has been a target for both Arsenal and Newcastle United over the last few months, but there’s still no suggestion that he will get his big move in the coming weeks.

The Belgian has entered the final six months of his contract at Leicester City. He looks certain to leave the Foxes – either before the end of this month or in the summer transfer window.

Reports have claimed that both Arsenal and Newcastle could make a move for Tielemans, with Keith Downie revealing central midfield is the priority for the Magpies.

Newcastle will have to ‘smash their wage structure’ to sign Arsenal target Tielemans

The Northern Echo reported a couple of weeks ago that Newcastle will make formal enquiries over Tielemans and his Leicester City teammate, James Maddison.

Ben Jacobs claimed a few days ago that ‘there’s a growing feeling that Newcastle might consider a low offer for Tielemans in January’ (GiveMeSport).

Dean Jones then told GiveMeSport that Arsenal are the club who are in a stronger position than Newcastle to sign the Belgian midfielder, who has been branded as ‘incredible’.

Downie has had his say now and he believes that Newcastle will have to break their salary structure if they are to sign Tielemans this month.

The journalist told GiveMeSport: “I think Tielemans would be perfect, but obviously, the issue is they’re going to have to smash their wage structure to sign Tielemans.

“But if you get him cheap enough, is it worth it? You could be saving yourself £30 million – £40 million with no transfer fee. So, perhaps you can then reinvest that into the wages.

“That’s up to the club to make that decision, but I do think central midfield is now the priority.”

Tielemans would be a great signing for many clubs in the Premier League.

The Belgian is still only 25 and is not at his prime yet. He’s excellent on the ball, can score goals and create chances, and knows the English game already.

He’d fit in really well at Newcastle and Arsenal, but whether either club will make a move for him before the window shuts this month remains to be seen.

Leicester take on Nottingham Forest this evening and Tielemans is expected to start.
