Football journalist Dean Jones has claimed that Newcastle United were going to sign Dominic Calvert-Lewin from Everton this summer, but the Englishman’s injury has scuppered their plans.

The Magpies haven’t quite been the most active club in this summer’s transfer window like many people expected. They have been fairly quiet, but Eddie Howe has brought in a few talented players – the most impressive of which is Sven Botman from Lille.

The focus for Newcastle now, however, has to be at the other end of the pitch.

The Toon have been linked with a number of top-quality strikers since the window opened, but none more than Everton star Calvert-Lewin, who is valued at an eye-watering £60 million.

Newcastle were ‘going to’ sign Dominic Calvert-Lewin but his injury changed plans

Everton boss Frank Lampard revealed before the opening day of the new Premier League season that Calvert-Lewin had suffered a ‘freak injury’ in training. BBC Sport then revealed that he will be out for six weeks, which means he will not return before the transfer window shuts.

That apparently ruined Newcastle’s transfer plan as the Magpies were ready to make a bid to sign the ‘brilliant‘ English striker.

Jones told GiveMeSport: “It’s just what profile of striker they decide to get in. They were going to get Calvert-Lewin, but obviously, he got injured, so that’s really scuppered their ideas of going for him.

“I’m told we’ve got to the stage where it might not be an obvious name that they go for. It might be like an Ekitike alternative here, who was seen as a project striker, not someone that might make an immediate impact.”

Everton definitely missed Calvert-Lewin in their defeat to Chelsea at the weekend, but the Englishman’s injury may well prove to be a blessing in disguise for Lampard and co.

If Jones is to be believed, Newcastle would’ve signed the 25-year-old if he wasn’t injured. Now, the Toffees are almost guaranteed to keep hold of him at least for another season.

That is a huge positive for Everton, but it complicates things further for Newcastle.

Missing out on Hugo Ekitike was bad enough for the Magpies’ summer plans, but with Calvert-Lewin no longer an option as well, things could get tricky in the coming weeks.
