Newcastle United and Hugo Ekitike seemed to go hand in hand for a while but the young striker has indeed opted to sign for PSG in the end.

After initially being a top target in January, Ekitike was once again chased by the Newcastle hierarchy during the last few months, with the exciting Frenchman said to be a key target for Eddie Howe and his team. However, despite apparently agreeing both a fee and personal terms for Ekitike, PSG have ended up landing the youngster.

And while Magpies fans might have moved on from the matter, a report from today’s Reading The Game newsletter for The Independent suggests Newcastle have missed out on a potential superstar in Ekitike.

In that reports, it’s claimed that figures within the football industry were surprised that Newcastle were the only real competition for PSG when it came to Ekitike. Indeed, it’s suggested the buzz around the striker is there due to him being a guarantee as a number nine.

Labelled as an ‘immensely exciting prospect’ by the report, it will certainly be interesting for the Toon Army to sit back and see how Ekitike ends up doing in Paris.

TBR’s View: Newcastle Miss Out On Ekitike But Not Their Fault

There was a feeling all along that Ekitike’s agent was playing a bit of a game with this one. The striker was, at one point anyway, all set to sign for Newcastle.

But all along, there seemed to be a nagging doubt around the deal and as soon as PSG did become involved properly, the writing was on the wall really for Newcastle.

PIF seemed to do all they could to land Ekitike but the lure of Paris and its riches proved too much. So while Ekitike might end up going on to do well, there wasn’t a lot more Newcastle could have done here.
