£40m man now left out of matchday squad after being linked with Newcastle move
Manchester United have left goalkeeper Dean Henderson out of their squad to face Aston Villa tonight in the FA Cup, in a nod that could suggest he’s on his way out of the club, amid links to a number of clubs.
The Manchester Evening News picked up on the team news earlier tonight as they suggest a loan move this month is a possibility for Henderson. After signing a new deal at Old Trafford, he has still failed to take the number one spot from David de Gea. Clubs including Tottenham and Newcastle, as well as Ajax, have been linked.
Of course, Henderson’s omission could be good news for Eddie Howe and Newcastle United. The Chronicle reported just two weeks back how Henderson was on Newcastle’s radar. This, despite Ralf Rangnick at the time suggesting the England stopper won’t be going anywhere.
But Rangnick’s claims have been thrown into doubt more than once now. Respected transfer expert, Fabrizio Romano, suggested Henderson was now ready to leave Old Trafford. MEN have claimed United would demand around £40m, should they be tempted to sell Henderson permanently.
Could Dean Henderson Join Newcastle On Loan?
While Tottenham and Newcastle are keen, it’s worth noting that Spurs won’t be landing Henderson in January. Especially on a loan deal. Sure, if they offered the £40m and promised him the number one spot in the summer, it could happen. But it remains unlikely.
Newcastle, though, are a more intriguing project. Backed by new cash rich owners in PIF, Henderson could well be tempted to move to the northeast. Newcastle can afford both his fee and wages, as we know.
Of course, they already have an array of goalkeepers. But given their lowly Premier League position, it’s hard to argue that any of them are top, top level. Martin Dubravka has done well in recent seasons, but Henderson is also proven at this level.
During his spell with Sheffield United he was exceptional. Now, a few years on and having slipped down the pecking order in terms of being England number one, Henderson might just fancy the chance. Newcastle, then, could be the ideal club for him.
