Manchester United Training Session

£36m man left out of matchday squad after being linked with Newcastle move

Newcastle United might have stuttered their way to a 1-1 draw with Watford this weekend, but away from the pitch there was some big news about one of their reported January targets.

The Magpies are being linked with a host of players this month. Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood have arrived to bolster the ranks, but there is a feeling more is needed for Eddie Howe. Deals are being worked on for the likes of Robin Gosens and Diego Carlos it seems. But for another reported target, Anthony Martial of Manchester United, it was a weekend of woe.

Newcastle were credited with being interested in Martial just last week. The Frenchman, who arrived at Old Trafford for around £36m with potential add-ons, has had an inconsistent time at United. And this weekend, amid talk he could leave this month, he hit a new low.

RONALDO NEEDS TO STOP WHINING.

United boss Ralf Rangnick commented after the game that Martial did not want to be in the squad. It was a bold statement from the Red Devils boss. But the saga hasn’t ended there. Martial himself took to Instagram later on that night to bite back. He insisted on there that he would never refuse to play. It appears, then, that there is trouble at the mill between Martial and Rangnick.

TBR’s View: Newcastle Best Steering Clear Of Anthony Martial

While Newcastle might be one of few clubs who can afford Martial this month, it seems they might be better off steering well clear.

There is obviously something awry at Man United. Whether the problem is from Martial’s end, or that Rangnick simply hasn’t taken kindly to him. Either way, it could be a deal that brings unnecessary drama to Newcastle.

The Magpies have been linked with ample transfer targets without Martial. And at this point in time, they look like being better served going for someone else, rather than the Frenchman.
