Report: Newcastle see 'immense' PL striker as much better option to sign than Solanke, he's now a key target

Newcastle United are keeping close tabs on Eddie Nketiah at Arsenal, with Eddie Howe considering making a move for the young Gunners star during January.

Nketiah has yet to sign a new deal with Arsenal. A number of clubs are looking at him, and reports earlier in the week suggested Newcastle had already cast admiring glances in his direction. And now, according to The Telegraph, Newcastle are actively considering Nketiah as a potential signing.

The Telegraph reports that Howe is keen on both Nketiah and Bournemouth striker, Dominic Solanke. However, with the Cherries flying in the Championship, there is an acceptance that Solanke will stay put for now. That has led the Magpies and Howe towards Nketiah, who they see as a more realistic option.

Nketiah has put himself back in contention with Arsenal of late. A number of good cameos have caught the eye, and Jamie Redknapp was full of praise for him just a few weeks back. Newcastle have already announced the signing of Kieran Trippier this morning. More are expected to follow in the coming weeks as PIF back Howe with big funds.

Mikel Arteta has previously been complimentary of Nketiah. Indeed, back in 2020, he praised the youngster for his ‘immense personality’, insisting he had big faith in his man.

Eddie Nketiah faces a big decision really. Does he stay with Arsenal and try and build on the bit of momentum he’s getting? Or does he move on and start afresh somewhere else?

Newcastle would be a good fit for him right now. Callum Wilson is out, and there is an opening there for someone to step in and score the goals.

But long-term, he could end up in a similar position to that he is in at Arsenal. Newcastle will be spending big if they stay up, which could push Nketiah down the pecking order again.
