Jamie Redknapp issues verdict on Eddie Nketiah after Arsenal win

Jamie Redknapp has lauded Eddie Nketiah after Arsenal won in the Carabao Cup quarter-final, and told Sky Sports (broadcast on 22/12; 22:07) that the striker cannot do anymore to prove a point to Mikel Arteta.

Nketiah was the star of the show on Tuesday as the Gunners booked their last four spot. Arsenal thrashed Sunderland 5-1 at the Emirates, particularly stepping through the gears in the second-half.

Nketiah continued his superb record in this year’s competition. The 22-year-old bagged a hat-trick, reminding everyone how lethal he can be in and around the six-yard box.

Of course, it has not been an easy time for the starlet. He has struggled for game-time in the Premier League. And he has apparently rejected a new contract with his current terms set to expire in the summer.

Obviously, some will be wary of getting carried away given that Arsenal were up against League One opposition. But Redknapp has suggested that Arteta will have taken note of that display regardless of who Arsenal were up against.

“You can’t do anymore,” he told Sky Sports. “He’s got great energy, always works hard. For Nketiah to get that hat-trick would have meant so much to him. It doesn’t matter what the game, you’ve just got to keep doing it and keep proving what you can do.”

Door not necessarily shut for Eddie Nketiah at Arsenal

It would certainly appear that Nketiah is likely to leave if his game-time in the Premier League does not increase. And in truth, it may not only be down to this season, but also what his prospects look like should he stick around.

Right now, Alexandre Lacazette is doing brilliantly in the striker role. He has stepped up in the wake of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang being stripped of the captaincy.

There are now questions being asked of Aubameyang’s future. And Lacazette is also out of contract in the summer. So there are no guarantees over any of their futures.

With that in mind, the door cannot be shut on Nketiah. And it is certainly too soon for Nketiah to shut the door on Arsenal.
