Newcastle United have reportedly added Everton defender Mason Holgate to their January shortlist. A player that Alan Shearer raved about in January 2020, branding the Englishman “no-nonsense”, but also “really impressive”.
Newcastle are expected to be in the market for central defenders in the January window. Eddie Howe’s men cannot stop leaking goals, and a lack of quality in the middle of the defence is said to be the major reason why.
Ciaran Clark was signed while in the Championship, Fede Fernandez is injured, Fabian Schar always has a mistake in him. Captain Jamaal Lascelles is not the player he was when Newcastle first gained promotion.
Sky Sports list a plethora of different players that Newcastle’s new owners are targeting. One of the surprise names to be linked is £25k-a-week (Spotrac) Everton man Holgate, who can also operate as a right-back.

Speaking on Match of the Day in January 2020, after a 1-1 draw with West Ham, Shearer heaped praise on Holgate. He was impressed at Holgate’s ability to be a defender, but also more than capable with the ball at his feet.
“He’s maturing and getting better,” Shearer said. “His decision-making is excellent. No-nonsense, but not afraid to play. Really impressive. Quick, strong, and everything you’d want in a performance from one of your defenders.”
Shearer on Holgate: Everton man a good start for Newcastle
When Holgate has got himself a run of games in the Everton side, he has built up momentum and looked a sturdy player at this level. Not only that, but he offers versatility – able to play right-back, or even in holding midfield.
At just 25, and with 100 Premier League appearances to his name, the Everton defender is experienced in England’s top tier – but with plenty of years left in the tank. If Newcastle can get him, they should.
