According to Sky Sports, Newcastle United remain keen on bringing in Everton defender Mason Holgate in January, despite the club rejecting the former Barnsley man in the summer.
Sky’s report names a host of players that Newcastle could look to sign this summer. Among them is Holgate, is somewhat on the fringes of things under Rafa Benitez at Everton. The Magpies are expected to add a number of new signings in January, with defenders a priority.
Interest in Holgate is nothing brand new. Newcastle have been linked before, and we reported in the summer how Steve Bruce rejected the chance to sign the Everton man in September. Looking back, that now seems like a bad move from the ex-Newcastle boss.

Eddie Howe is looking for a number of new signings. Sky names a whole host of players, including Kieran Trippier and Tottenham star, Joe Rodon. In midfield, the likes of Sander Berge are mentioned, while Ben Brereton Diaz is a name being touted up top.
Howe has struggled to turn things around thus far. Despite getting a first win of the season, the Magpies have ran into the brick walls that are Man City and Liverpool.
Holgate has done well at Everton since arriving from Barnsley. He’s put in a number of impressive performances, including one at Liverpool, for which Peter Crouch labelled him ‘different class’ for earlier in 2021.
TBR’s View: Holgate Is Ideal For Newcastle Right Now
This Newcastle team needs players who don’t need time to adapt and can simply come in and work. Holgate, with bags of Premier League experience already, fits the bill.
Sure, he’s not been in the first XI as much as he’d like this term. In fact, he’s made just seven appearances for Everton under Benitez. But that should play into Newcastle’s hands. Holgate will probably want a move, with first-team football surely on his agenda.
In terms of a fee, it shouldn’t really matter for Newcastle. PIF need to act and show intent. And landing players like Holgate is the first step on their journey.
