Newcastle United remain keen on signing Chelsea goalkeeper, Kepa Arrizabalaga, according to a report from The Athletic today.
The Spanish stopper has fallen down the pecking order with Chelsea preferring the imperious Edouard Mendy over Kepa in recent times. This, despite Chelsea paying around £71m for the ‘keeper back in 2018.
And according to The Athletic, Chelsea insiders noted how Kepa spent longer than usual saying goodbye to his teammates ahead of the summer break. With that, there are suggestions he is on his way out of the club, with Newcastle named as a club who are keen on signing him.
Of course, the Magpies are expected to have a busy summer and are wanting a new goalkeeper. Manchester United stopper, Dean Henderson, is the name being most heavily linked with a move to St James’ Park as things stand.
Should Newcastle decide that Kepa is their man of choice, he will no doubt cost a considerable amount given Chelsea paid such a fee themselves. The Spaniard is under contract until 2025 after signing a long-term deal when he arrived.
TBR’s View: Dean Henderson Or Kepa Arrizabalaga For Newcastle
Both goalkeepers could be good options for Newcastle but you can imagine most fans might fancy Henderson as the preferred option.
Kepa, for all his ‘fantastic‘ qualities, has had an error prone few years and seems to be a goalkeeper low on confidence. A change might do him good, of course, and Newcastle might see the best of him should he sign.
With Henderson, there is confidence in the game it’s just a case of him getting a run of games somewhere. He’s proven he can do it with Sheffield United and at times at Old Trafford too. For Eddie Howe, it’s a big decision really. The top teams all have a top goalkeeper, and Howe needs to get his call right.
