Jamal Lascelles has cleared the air over his suspected injury ahead of Newcastle United’s UEFA Champions League clash tomorrow against PSG.

The 30-year-old defender appeared to have come off this weekend against Chelsea amid ongoing rumours that Lascelles could be sold in the January transfer window.

However, speaking to BBC North East, the centre-back cleared everything by admitting that he only came off to change his boots, with the studs snapping on the original pair.

With the centre-back putting Newcastle ahead, it was a game to remember for Lascelles, even if he scared some Newcastle fans over his potential fitness.

Lascelles said: “It meant a lot because I wasn’t having the best of games, struggling a bit with my boots and my foot. But I was pleased to score and I do think it was the turning point in the momentum.

“I’m fine. My studs snapped so I had to change boots and I had not worn them before so I had a size nine on one foot and a size 11 on the other, so my feet were all over the gaff!”

Lascelles’ Newcastle career has been written off more times than we can count, yet this season has seen the defender rise to the occasion in a big way.

The club captain has been imperious in the defence in recent matches, with Lascelles starting the last seven Premier League fixtures and leading Newcastle out in the Champions League.

And the defender being fit for the Toon’s upcoming clash against PSG is big for Eddie Howe’s side, who needs every able body possible for tomorrow’s trip to Paris.

Indeed, Lascelles has returned to form for Newcastle, and the defender needs to ensure that get can maintain this level of performance in upcoming matches that could define the Magpies season.
