Report: Newcastle now eye move for 30-year-old international star, years after his agent claimed Rafa Benitez insulted him

Newcastle United have now made a £25m bid for Colombian striker, Duvan Zapata, as they look to press ahead with the January transfer plans this week.

According to the Daily Record, Zapata has now emerged as a serious target for the Toon. It’s claimed that PIF are working towards a deal to bring the Atalanta star into the club, should they fail in a mega-money move for Benfica’s Darwin Nunez.

Newcastle are frantically working away in the market this week. The draw against Watford this weekend did nobody any favours and PIF are now looking to act to help Eddie Howe. Defenders are top of the list, but Newcastle also want another striker to go alongside Chris Wood. This is where Zapata comes into the fold.

Best XI With Between 1-7 Caps

Zapata has scored an impressive nine goals in 16 this season. Now aged 30, the Colombian striker has been around for some time now on the European scene. A spell at Napoli saw him win the Coppa Italia, but it is with Atalanta where he has excelled in recent seasons.

Last season, he smashed in 19 goals and provided another 14 assists. That included three goals in eight in the Champions League, showing his prowess at the highest of levels. Zapata has admitted previously he’d be open to a move to England, conceding he was an Arsenal fan as a youngster.

TBR’s View: Zapata An Experienced And Sensible Option For Newcastle

Newcastle are really going for it now and while there is a air of desperation in some ways, you can’t say PIF aren’t putting the work in. Zapata would be a smart signing. He seems to have got better with age and as things stand, he’s probably in the prime of his career. His goals record is impressive in recent times and Newcastle need someone to hit the ground running.

The Colombian is quick, powerful, and has that clear eye for goal. At £25m, he won’t break the bank either. Certainly, he could prove a very smart addition.

Interestingly, Zapata has had a run-in with former Toon boss Rafa Benitez. In 2015, Zapata’s agent claimed Benitez had ‘insulted’ the striker with how he treated him in Naples.
