Report: Champions League winner Newcastle offered £8m-a-year in January has agreed a move elsewhere
When you talk about this January transfer window just gone, it’s hard to speak about it without mentioning Newcastle United and the plethora of names they were linked with.
Over the course of the month, Newcastle were credited with interest in new players almost daily. In the end, they signed five players, with Bruno Guimaraes the headline capture late in the day.
However, one name who the club now won’t be signing at all despite being linked, is German defender, Niklas Sule.
As reported on TBR in January, Newcastle were ready to give Sule around £8m-a-year in wages but at the time, couldn’t quite get a deal done. And now it’s become apparent as to why the Mags struggled.
Per Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, it has been confirmed by Borussia Dortmund that they have indeed landed Sule.
Sule will move to the German giants on a free-transfer after enjoying a hugely successful spell with Bayern Munich.
The 26-year-old has won four Bundesliga titles, while he was always part of the Champions League winning Bayern side in 2020.
Newcastle, then, will have to move on. Not that it will matter too much, given the amount of players reportedly on their radar.
TBR’s View: Sule A Fine Player But Newcastle Plough On
There’s no point crying over spilled milk is the saying. And that’s how Newcastle will have to treat this one – and the many others down the line – that they miss out on.
Sure enough, Niklas Sule would have been a fine signing. But he’s joined Dortmund, who are always in the Champions League and a leading club in Germany.
Newcastle might face a lot of this sort of news in the coming windows. But they can’t let it bother them and they’ve enough resources and money to find replacements at the drop of a hat.
