According to German outlet Sport1, Bayern Munich defender Niklas Sule has turned down a move to Newcastle United.

The 26-year-old is among the best defenders in Germany. Standing at 6ft 5 in tall, he is a brilliant centre-half, but his contract situation has left Bayern in a very tricky position.

Sule has entered the final six months of his contract. The German champions have been working really hard to convince him to stay, but his demands have been too hard to meet so far.

Newcastle, however, were ready to pay him what he wants, but he isn’t convinced of a move to Tyneside.

The report, titled ‘Sule: No to the Saudi millions,’ claims that talks between Bayern and the German’s camp are not going smoothly.

The Bundesliga giants have offered Sule a new deal, but that hasn’t convinced the defender. The report claims that he is looking for a salary of at least £8.35 million-a-year (€10m-a-year).

Bayern are yet to meet those demands, but Newcastle, who are now owned by some of the wealthiest people in the world, were ready to give Sule what he wanted if he agreed to join them.

However, the German treble-winner has no interest in joining a side that is not in the Champions League.

Who else are the Magpies looking at?

It is clear as day that Newcastle United are in the market looking for a new centre-half. Sule would’ve been an extraordinary signing, but they have been linked with other top-quality options as well.

Lille’s Sven Botman was their preferred choice, but that move looks extremely difficult. Monaco’s Benoit Badiashile is another one they are reportedly looking at, while Sevilla’s Diego Carlos and Liverpool’s Nat Phillips are also said to be options for Howe before the window shuts.

It will be interesting to see who will end up at Newcastle by the end of the month. One of the above-mentioned names would be a quality addition, but it won’t be easy to complete deals for any of them.
