Newcastle land boost in race to sign ‘highly-talented’ £14m star for free
Inter Milan have gifted Newcastle United a boost in their reported pursuit of a free transfer for Borussia Monchengladbach defender Matthias Ginter.
That’s according to Calciomercato, who note the Nerazzurri have now begun to cool their interest in the German. The San Siro side have been chasing the centre-half with insistence, but are starting to slow their advances.
Inter are determined to be one of the big players in the free agent market at the end of the season. So, Chairman Giuseppe Marotta has kept a close eye on Ginter’s situation for some time.
Borussia Monchengladbach announced at the end of December that Ginter will leave the Bundesliga side in June. His contract in North Rhine-Westphalia expires this summer, and is keen to embark on a new challenge.
But Ginter’s adventure may no longer include the San Siro, as Inter Milan refuse to meet his salary demands. The Serie A holders are unwilling to offer the 27-year-old more than €3m-a-year (£48k-a/w), which is unlikely to be enough.
So, Marotta has started to give greater thought to signing Lazio ace Luiz Felipe, instead. The 24-year-old is also a free agent in June and is far more affordable.
Inter manager Simone Inzaghi also believes the Brazilian has room to improve following his time with Lazio. Felipe made 104 appearances under the Nerazzurri coach while he stood at the Stadio Olimpico helm.
Inter hand Newcastle boost in transfer race for Gladbach’s Ginter
Inter Milan cooling their pursuit of Ginter hands Newcastle a boost in their transfer chase of the Borussia Monchengladbach defender. Reports by Inter Live note the Toon and Bayern Munich are ‘very serious’ rival suitors.
Newcastle are also able to gazump whatever contract terms Inter Milan offer Ginter to seal a free transfer once he leaves Borussia Monchengladbach. But the 46-cap enforcer will find it hard to reject Bayern’s interest.
Ginter joined Borussia Monchengladbach from Borussia Dortmund in 2017 for €17m (£14m) before add-ons. Jurgen Klopp had lauded the Freiburg-native as a ‘highly-talented’ player, via BVB.de, during his time at the Westfalenstadion.
The 6 ft 3 talent has since made 166 competitive appearances for Die Fohlen, scoring 10 goals and five assists. He has also captained Adi Hutter’s side to a 2-1 win at Bayern Munich on Friday night.
