Newcastle 'very serious' about signing the new Sergio Ramos, PIF have the funds - report
Newcastle United look set to make their first signing by bringing Kieran Trippier to St James’ Park.
However, the Magpies are likely to make multiple signings in the January transfer window.
The Newcastle defence has struggled this season, so there’s scope to bring more defensive recruits.
And with the Saudi PIF on board, the Magpies have a considerable transfer kitty with which to bolster their ranks.
That said, Newcastle will likely have competition for plenty of targets.
According to Inter Live, the Tyneside outfit is up against Inter Milan and Bayern Munich for the services of Matthias Ginter.
Recently, Borussia Monchengladbach announced that Ginter would be leaving the club in June when his contract expires.
The 27-year-old will move on in 2022, but it remains to be seen whether Gladbach could cash in on him this month.
Inter Live claims Newcastle and Bayern are “very serious” about signing Ginter.
The Nerazzurri are apparently in talks with agent Gordon Stipic, while Bayern are reportedly going to table a bid soon.
However, the Italian outlet claims the Magpies have the “economic might” to tempt Ginter.
Can Newcastle land Ramos 2.0?
German football icon Lothar Matthaus, who won the Ballon d’Or in 1990, knows a good player when he sees one.
The World Cup winner is a big fan of Ginter and has even compared him to Sergio Ramos.
Matthaus told Sport BILD, via Bundesliga.com: “Ginter has become a leader at the back, in a similar way to Ramos at Real.
“He doesn’t just give instructions to his teammates, but leads them as well.
“That’s what Ginter is doing really well at the moment. He reminds me of Ramos.”
