Report: Newcastle hope to have South American speedster in before Watford

Newcastle United want to complete the signing of Sevilla defender Diego Carlos before they face Watford next week, according to a report from 90Min.

The Magpies are eager to add new signings to their squad in January. Kieran Trippier has already signed, although he won’t have liked what he saw as Newcastle were knocked out of the FA Cup by Cambridge this afternoon. However, there could be happier times to come for the Toon Army.

90Min reports that Newcastle are confident of landing Carlos. A £28m bid has already gone in, although it’s been claimed Sevilla could want as much as £40m for the big defender. That fee, of course, would match or even break the club’s record transfer of another Brazilian, Joelinton.

Carlos would be another smart addition for Newcastle. He’s an immediate upgrade on the current first-team defenders and has been lauded previously for his pace and power. The Brazilian has excelled with Sevilla but at 28, could be ready to make the move to England on a hefty contract at St James.

The Magpies have been linked with a number of players in recent weeks. Along with Carlos, Sven Botman is another defender the club are said to be considering.

TBR’s View: Diego Carlos To Newcastle Needed More Than Ever

That today from Newcastle was woeful. If there was ever a performance to tell PIF to dig deep, and do it quickly, then it was today’s effort.

Frankly, Newcastle need to put the pedal to the floor now with new signings. Diego Carlos is perfect. Strong, quick, aggressive, and better than what’s already in the squad. He might end up costing £40m, but that is pocket change to PIF if the helps them stay up.

Sevilla are holding out for a good fee for a good player. But ultimately, Newcastle need to just pay up.
