Report: Newcastle in talks with Koulibaly-liked powerhouse; would cost more than Willock
Newcastle United are now reportedly in talks to sign Monaco defender, Benoit Badiashile, with a deal for Lille star Sven Botman looking increasingly difficult to get done.
The Magpies are desperate to land defensive reinforcements in the January window. Lille star Botman is a key target, but the French club are holding out for £40m, while the player himself is keen to move to a club offering European football.
And now, according to the Daily Mail, Newcastle have switched their attentions to Badiashile instead. The impressive 20-year-old Frenchman is wanted by a host of other clubs. Manchester United, West Ham, and Wolves are all said to be keen on the young defender. However, it is Newcastle who are pressing on with the move.
The Mail claims that £35m might be enough to land Badiashile. Monaco, unlike Lille, are more open to cashing in on one of their prized assets. If he was to sign, he’d be Newcastle’s second most expensive buy ever. The current record is held by Joelinton, who cost around £40m.
Rather impressively, Badiashile has managed more than 100 appearances already for Monaco. Despite his age, he has been a regular for the French giants, while he also has nine caps for France under-21s.
TBR’s View: Newcastle Moving Quickly To Tie Up New Signings
It seems like Newcastle are trying to act quickly to land new players. The weekend loss to Cambridge will have been a big kick up the backside and PIF will be aware they need to get new players in, and fast.
The only issue with Badiashile is that it’s a lot of money for a relatively unproven talent. Of course, the upside is that the Magpies could well be getting a defender who can dominate for the next decade. This is a player who has been compared to two respected defenders in Kalidou Koulibaly and Raphael Varane.
Basiashile would be a welcome addition. Albeit, there has to be question marks about what impact he can have in the immediate.
