Newcastle contact Spurs target deemed the 'new Varane' - report

Newcastle United have reportedly joined Tottenham Hotspur in the race to sign Benoit Badiashile.

According to Get French Football News, the Magpies “have begun to make discreet enquiries” over the Monaco ace.

In November, Calciomercato reported that Spurs were in pursuit of Badiashile.

As well as Newcastle and Tottenham, fellow Premier League side Wolves are also reportedly eyeing the 20-year-old.

And Manchester United were linked with Badiashile in 2020 – indeed, the player rejected an Old Trafford approach.

The 6ft 4in defender came through the ranks at the Stade Louis II and made his breakthrough in 2019-20.

Badiashile has made 104 appearances for Monaco, including 19 in all competitions this season.

Monaco vice-president Oleg Petrov waxed lyrical about Badiashile last year.

“He is a great talent,” he told Get French Football News.

“He will perform and then maybe one day, he can have by far a better career at one of the best clubs.

“Very solid, very young, playing from 18 for the first-team at Monaco, also playing in the Espoirs team for France.

“Very good technically, very humble, very fast, gives a lot of comforts when he plays, but still very young.”

The same outlet wrote in 2019: “Comparisons could be made with someone like Kalidou Koulibaly of Napoli, one of Europe’s best ball-playing centre-backs.

“In the way Badiashile commands the defence at the back but is also capable of distributing the ball calmly and with great accuracy when needed.”

And last year, Spanish outlet AS said Badiashile was like “a new Raphael Varane”.
