Newcastle fans are all in agreement after Giovanni Leoni transfer news emerges

Newcastle United supporters will be far more relieved than most that the summer transfer window has passed.

Alexander Isak signed for Liverpool on deadline day in a British transfer record £125 million fee as the saga dominated the headlines in the North East.

Newcastle wasted no time announcing the signing of Yoane Wissa, with only minutes to go before the deadline to submit the deal sheet to the Premier League, which marked a hopeful end to a long summer.

The Magpies recruited well – Nick Woltemade’s £65m arrival from VfB Stuttgart meant Eddie Howe finally got the firepower he desperately needed to kick-start the season at St James’ Park, and still with money to spare from the Isak sale.

However, after the dust had settled on the transfer window, another transfer bombshell has emerged involving Newcastle and Liverpool’s £26m man, Giovanni Leoni.

Newcastle fans are not happy after Giovanni Leoni bombshell

Parma CEO Federico Cherubini has revealed the Serie A outfit rejected Newcastle’s offer for Leoni prior to his arrival at Anfield.

Of course, the Newcastle faithful are far from pleased. The Magpies lost out on Hugo Ekitike to Liverpool earlier in the summer, and this latest bombshell adds further fuel to the flames of an already disgruntled fanbase.

It is clear that the supporters are not one bit pleased with their club being made the centre of attention once again and have hit back against the claims.

One supporter said: “The Giovanni Leoni transfer to Liverpool is nothing short of a disgrace, Newcastle got robbed blind by a kid who clearly doesn’t know what’s good for his career. Parma’s CEO basically admitted they ditched a better offer just because Leoni threw a tantrum to join Liverpool’s overhyped ‘culture.’

“Meanwhile, Newcastle, with their ambitious Saudi backing and clear path to first team action, are the real winners here they dodged a bullet with this prima donna.”

Another added: “Your obsession with our small club is quite interesting, bordering on obsessive. We all know Newcastle was never in discussions for Leoni, but I guess saying otherwise satisfies your desire to slam our club. I would think your PR commitments to Liverpool would keep you busy enough.”

It is worth noting that the opinions from Newcastle supporters are in response to Fabrizio Romano, one of the most respected and well-known transfer journalists in the industry, who quoted comments from Federico Cherubini in his tweet.

Nevertheless, the fans, albeit few are disgruntled, are not overly concerned with Leoni’s reported rejection: “Imagine choosing Liverpool just to loan yourself out to midtable Serie A again by January.”

“It’s funny we’re getting laughed at when it should be the selling club, they turned down a higher offer, any idea how stupid that sounds?” Another wrote.

Newcastle signed Malick Thiaw from AC Milan this summer, and the supporters are more than happy with their options at centre-back despite the bombshell.

“Let’s be honest here. We lost out to Liverpool. Not really baffling, is it. They probably offered 5m less and have the pull. The Toon fans aren’t losing a minute of sleep over this. You can all laugh as much as you want. We got another centre-back.”

What did the Parma CEO say about Newcastle and Giovanni Leoni?

Cherubini revealed the news when speaking to Gazzetta di Parma – the CEO explained that the Italian side never originally intended to sell Leoni.

“I’ve always said that the club, along with the owners, wanted to keep Giovanni, and he’s always said he’d be happy to stay.

“We even turned down an offer from Newcastle, which was more advantageous than the one Liverpool eventually made. When the Reds came forward, our plans changed: both because the offer was very attractive and because Giovanni made it clear he was very happy to take advantage of this opportunity.

“On the one hand, it’s obviously disappointing to have lost such a promising player, but on the other, there’s pride in a club like ours and recognition for those who believed in this boy in unsuspecting times, when he’d only played a few games in Serie B.”
