Newcastle could now bid for attacker Manchester City sold in 2022

Newcastle secured three points against Southampton on Saturday to kickstart the 2024/25 campaign in ideal fashion – but Eddie Howe remains discontent with his attack.

There are still doubts over the future of Miguel Almiron at Newcastle, with the Magpies seemingly keen to sign a new forward regardless of whether the Paraguay international completes a move away or not.

Now – according to sources in Spain – Newcastle could bid for a player Manchester City sold in 2022…

Newcastle could bid for Ferran Torres

A story from SPORT in Spain now states that Newcastle could submit a bid to sign Ferran Torres from Barcelona.

The Spanish news outlet refer to Football Insider at the start of their story, but add their own information in claiming that Newcastle could offer over €30m (£25.6m) to sign the Spain international.

It is said that Barcelona would be open to a sale as the Spanish giants look to improve their financial situation, which is currently blocking them from registering new signings, although Torres himself would prefer to stay at the Camp Nou.

SPORT add that Paul Mitchell – Director of Football at Newcastle – is a huge admirer of the Spaniard, although the Barcelona No.7 is unwilling to return to the Premier League, if he is forced out of Catalonia for financial reasons.

Torres – who Tottenham also admire – scored nine goals in 28 Premier League appearances during his time at Manchester City, including a stunning backheel against Newcastle at St James’ Park, which even won the 2020/21 Nissan Goal of the Season award.

The 24-year-old actually scored a hat-trick in that game, which Manchester City won 4-3 back in May 2021.

Makes no sense

Newcastle do need a winger, but Howe requires a left-footed option for the right to provide balance and compliment what Anthony Gordon offers on the left flank.

Therefore, a move for Torres – who is similar to the Newcastle No.10 in regards to the fact he often starts on the left, cutting inside on his right foot – would make little sense.

Should Gordon suffer a serious injury, the Magpies have another outstanding option in that position in the form of Harvey Barnes, so it would be foolish to add a third player of that ilk to the same area, when realistically, a winger who plays more like Michael Olise or Jarrod Bowen is needed.

Nevertheless, be sure to keep an eye on this situation, as Newcastle could soon bid for Torres.
